OCPA Launches Latino Outreach Theatre Program

Continuing to serve its mission of empowering and nurturing youth of all cultures and races through education and performance in the theatre arts, this spring the Oregon Conservatory of Performing Arts (OCPA) is launching the pilot program of its Conservatorio Bilingüe, or Bilingual Conservatory. The Conservatorio Bilingüe is a program designed to provide Latino students with the opportunity to develop their own talents by working with Latino theater professionals on a culturally specific curriculum. The program is designed to help Latino students learn more about their culture and heritage and raise their self-esteem, confidence, and sense of purpose. The goal of this program is to further enrich the lives of local Latino students.

The only program of its kind in the Rogue Valley, the Conservatorio Bilingüe is a bilingual after-school theatre program designed for Latino youth but open to any and all students interested in participating in a multicultural program. Students will learn specifically about the history of Chicano theatre, Latino culture and heritage, and how it relates to the students’ lives today. Through a series of five Saturday workshops beginning April 7, students will learn basic acting techniques, improvisational skills, playwriting, the culture of storytelling, and presentation skills. OCPA hopes to empower youth to express themselves and stand up against behaviors that might endanger them.

As part of the OCPA's spring program, and through a kind donation from the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF), Conservatorio Bilingüe students will see a performance at OSF and then meet and talk with the actors after the show.

The program will be taught by Juan Rivera Lebron of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Darcy Rogers, OCPA vice-president and the Spanish teacher and advisor to the International Club at Crater High, will oversee the program.
