Continuing to serve its mission of "empowering and nurturing youth through education and performance in the theatre arts," OCPA introduced and performed for the first time in southern Oregon Quilt: A Musical Celebration.

Quilt: A Musical Celebration
is a unique and affecting work dealing with a timely, contemporary subject. This series of stories for, from, and about the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt is told through the eyes of one volunteer’s experience while making a panel in memory of a friend.

Through word and music, Quilt: A Musical Celebration commemorates those lost to AIDS and those of us left behind.

By staging this timely and provocative musical with the voices of teens, we hope to further educate our community about the impact of AIDS on all facets of society.

"If anything good rises from AIDS, it’s to remind us why we live.
This musical does that, again and again."
—Orlando Sentinal

"A touching portrayal that encompasses a full range
of emotions and lifestyles."
—Las Vegas Review-Journal

We Are One Voice

A percentage of the royalties from Quilt: A Musical Celebration are donated to various AIDS organizations, including the NAMES Project and Equity Fights AIDS.

In conjunction with OCPA's production of Quilt: A Musical Celebration, a block from the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt was on display at the Rogue Gallery, 40 South Barlett Street in downtown Medford, thanks to generosity of local donors who provided the necessary funds for its transportation.

Stories That Create the Quilt

In June 1987 a small group of strangers gathered in a San Francisco storefront to document the lives they feared history would neglect. Their goal was to create a memorial for those who had died of AIDS and thereby help people understand the devastating impact of the disease.

Today the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt memorializes the more than 25 million people who have died worldwide and comprises more than 44,000 individual handmade panels. More than 14 million people have visited the Quilt at thousands of locations worldwide. Through such displays the NAMES Project Foundation has raised more than $3 million for AIDS service organizations throughout North America.

The Quilt has redefined the term public art. It was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 and remains the largest community art project in the world. It has been the subject of countless books, films, scholarly papers, articles, and theatrical, artistic, and musical performances, including Quilt: A Musical Celebration and Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt, which won the Academy Award as the best feature-length documentary film of 1989.

A memorial, a tool for education, and a work of art, the Quilt is a unique creation, an uncommon and uplifting response to the tragic loss of human life.
