Camp #1

The Tempest

June 16 to July 11, 1:00 to 5:30
Ages 12 to 18
Performance: July 12

This camp is now under way.

This camp and performance are at Saint Mary's School, 816 Black Oak Drive.

Although The Tempest might correctly be called a romantic comedy, the title and the opening scene portend an exploration of conflicts more complex than romantic: tempests of class, colonialism, utopian society, familial and generational conflict, discord and revenge, and forbidden love are woven throughout this compelling play. Originally listed as a comedy, modern editors have relabeled The Tempest a romance. Today it is considered one of Shakespeare’s greatest works.

All students will experience an education in Shakespeare and theatre from studying the language as well as movement and improvisation. The camp includes workshops in dance, basic acting, text analysis, and voice and speech. This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to study with actors and educators from the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

Directed by Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s Tyrone Wilson
Assistant director:
Caroline Shaffer

Camp #2

Tom Sawyer

July 7 to July 25, 8:30 to 12:30
Ages 6 to 12
Performance: July 26
This camp and performance are at Saint Mary's School, 816 Black Oak Drive.

This musical adaptation of the Mark Twain classic is the story of a boy growing up in the 1800s in Hannibal, Missouri, as narrated by Mark Twain. Kids will sing, act, and dance through a fun-filled adventure with Tom, Aunt Polly, Becky, and Huckleberry Finn in this revival of OCPA’s very first production.

Directed by Andrew Brock

Camp #3

West Side Story

July 21 to August 22, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Ages 13 to 18
Performance: August 23
Note: this is a five-week camp
This camp is at the Medford Congregational Church, 1801 E. Jackson Street.
The performance is at the Crater High School Performing Arts Center.

The world’s greatest love story takes to the streets in this landmark Broadway musical that is one of the theatre’s finest accomplishments.

Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is transported to modern-day New York, as two young idealistic lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs -- the Jets and the Sharks. Their struggle to survive in a world of intolerance and violence is one of the most relevant, innovative, and heart-wrenching musical dramas of our time.
The Broadway production won four Tony Awards and as a movie garnered four Oscars.

Directed by Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s Caroline Shaffer
